We are Teddington Sports Ground CIC and we own the lease on the land in Udney Park Road. We were formed in January last year.
Our Mission is to enable the provision of a fully equipped, fully staffed Community Ground for the use of our Community.
The journey to now has been an interesting one and we are at a stage in our development where we need your help to ensure the next chapter is not our last.
For those of you who have not heard of us and for those who have heard but not quite understood who we are and what we are doing, please allow us to explain.
Firstly – How we got here.
History of ground; It was Udney Farm from 1800s to the 1920s, then sold to Merchant Taylors School, who were based in Goswell Street in the City. After the School moved to Moor Park, Hertfordshire in the late 1930s, the grounds were sold to Lord Beaverbrook, (best known as proprietor of Daily Express) who later gave the grounds to St Mary’s Hospital Medical School. Imperial College merged with SMH in 1988 and site became known as the Imperial College Sports Ground.
Imperial ran it as a private sports ground. Newlands House School used it, plus there was an occasional Imperial game, so it was very exclusive and the local community had no access.
Imperial opened a new sports ground in Harlington, so put their Teddington grounds up for sale in April 2015. As Space to Play, a community-led association, we bid for the land but failed.
Quantum who were the successful bidders were approached by the leaders at Space to Play and granted a lease to Teddington Athletic FC, to run the ground whilst they put their designs and plans together. Ground has been used extensively by TAFC, TRC, England Rugby, Scouts, Keep-fit, Pilates, Kingston College etc. However, TAFC couldn’t make the site work financially and relinquished the lease in May.
Some 1500 children per month have been using the site in recent months.
SECONDLY - THE IMMEADIATE FUTURE
The board of the CIC is busy with ensuring that we can help local sports clubs by:
LOOKING AFTER THE GROUND
We are continuing with plans for the maintenance of the ground, and our next steps are to reseed the sports pitches in preparation for the coming months.
Taking Bookings for Use
From the many local sports and community associations that wish to use the ground and club house.
Providing A HOME FOR THE SCOUTS
The 3rd Teddington Scouts Group have been using the clubhouse, and we are delighted that they can continue to have a place to meet in the future.
A NEW DISABLED RIDING ARENA FOR PARK LANE STABLES
We’re pleased to say that our proposals now include a riding arena for people with disabilities. This will provide a much needed facility for the Park Lane Stables, a local registered charity whose volunteers run equine therapy and specialist activities for local people. The Park Lane Stables is part of the Riding for the Disabled Associations national network and has centres in Teddington and Hampton.
Finally - What happens next?
The planning application will be sent to LBRuT, and once it is verified the proposals will be open to public consultation.
We need to show the Council that the Teddington Community are behind our plans and would want to see the land developed for the good of everyone.
We realise that this will include the building of the assisted living facilities but we get the chance to develop the majority of the land for everyone.
Please keep and eye on our website, join our Facebook page or follow us on twitter for updates.
